studies strictly advise against skipping meals. According to Heley
Robinson, a Piedmont clinical dietitian, this is how our body reacts
to skipping meals - the blood sugar decreases, which affects the
ability of the brain to think straight as brain uses glucose to run
efficiently and if there is not enough glucose for the brain to use,
the productivity of both the body and mind decreases.
It
doesn’t stop here. Low blood sugar also causes the mind to react
making you feel irritable, bemused and fatigued. The body begins
to increase production of cortisol, the stress hormone that makes you
anxious and hungry. In fact, one can end up gaining weight by
skipping meals as skipping meals may cause the body’s metabolism
to slow down. “When you skip a meal or go a long time without
eating, your body goes into survival mode or alarm state,” says
Haley Robinson. “This can induce food craving which in turn makes
you to eat a lot. We usually tend to crave unhealthy foods
and all efforts of sticking to a healthy diet go out the door. When
you are that hungry, anything will do.”
But
at the same time, it’s not always possible to cook up a healthy
bite for every meal of the day. Some days you are just too busy. For
times like these, perhaps it’s a good idea to have a healthy snack
