Golden milk is a traditional Indian drink. Enriched with goodness of natural ingredients like ginger, turmeric, cardamom and honey, golden milk helps boost immunity. People in India take homemade golden milk when they have flu or cold. Turmeric is loaded with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and is also known to be a natural anti-depressant. Rich in antioxidants, turmeric helps regulate body temperature making it a great ingredient for winters. Ginger is also loaded with antioxidants, helps simulate macrophage activity, keeping viral infections at bay. Cardamom aids in digestion and adds a delicious, fragrant flavor to milk. Honey also has antibacterial properties and helps in weight management.
People in the northern states of India, where it can get very chilly during winters and even snows in the mountains, do not have houses equipped with heating systems. They keep their bodies warm with traditional bonfires and temperature regulating foods, golden milk being one of them.
For making the traditional golden milk at home, you’ll need:
Milk (whatever fat content you prefer) – 1 cup
Ground Turmeric - 1 quarter teaspoon
Green Cardamom 1-2, if you are using ground cardamom then just take a pinch of it
Ground Ginger - 1 quarter teaspoon
Honey – 1 tablespoon
If you are making the vegan version, then replace milk with almond milk and honey with maple syrup or dates syrup.
Take a pan. Add milk, turmeric, cardamom and ginger. Keep it on low flame and let it simmer for 5 mins. Turn the burner off, put a lid and let the flavors settle in for a couple of minutes. Pour milk in the cup, add honey and enjoy it hot.
Add honey at last, after you’ve turned the heat off and the flavors have infused; just before you are ready to drink the milk. Honey should not be added in very hot drinks or food. As per the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology), heating honey can destroy its essential enzymes and natural nutrients. In fact, cooked honey can produce delirious effects in the body and can also be fatal at times.
In another variation, take dried chopped dates instead of honey. Add dates with the other ingredients in milk and let it simmer. Dates will add a subtle hint of sweetness and a whole lot of goodness. Dates are naturally enriched with calcium, iron, fiber, magnesium and vitamins which help keep the body warm during winters.
